Shaft generator (PTO/PTI)

An electrical machine on the propeller shaft that generates ship's power from the efficient main engine at sea (power take-off), and on some ships can motor the shaft (power take-in).

Diesel generator sets

The auxiliary diesel engines and their alternators that generate the ship's electricity; enough sets are fitted that the ship keeps full power with one machine stopped.

Emergency generator set

A self-contained generator in its own space above the waterline, with its own fuel and starting arrangements, that automatically supplies essential loads if the main power plant fails.

Main switchboard

The central electrical distribution board where the generators connect and from which power flows to every consumer, containing the main circuit breakers and protection.

Emergency switchboard

A separate switchboard, fed by the emergency generator, that keeps essential safety loads — steering, emergency lighting, radio — alive if the main board is lost.

Distribution boards & group starter panels

The smaller local boards around the ship that split power onward to individual circuits and start groups of motors.

Motor control centers (MCC)

Cabinets that gather the starters, protection and controls for many motors in one place, one drawer per motor, for orderly power distribution to machinery.

Transformers

Static machines that step voltage between the ship's power levels — for example from high-voltage generation down to 440 V machinery and 230 V lighting networks.

Shore connection / AMP interface

The connection point and protection through which the ship takes electrical power from the quay in port, so engines can stop — alternative maritime power (AMP), increasingly required by ports.

UPS units

Uninterruptible power supplies — battery-backed units that bridge any power interruption for navigation, automation and radio equipment that must never blink.

Batteries & chargers (service / emergency / radio)

The ship's stationary battery banks and their chargers, providing starting power, emergency supply and the radio reserve source required by regulation.

Major variable frequency drives (VFD)

Power-electronic drives that control the speed of large motors — thrusters, pumps, fans — smoothly and efficiently instead of running them flat out.

Battery ESS & power conversion

A large energy-storage battery with its converters, used to shave load peaks, take over in harbour or add redundancy — the core of hybrid power plants.

Insulation monitoring devices

Instruments that continuously watch the electrical insulation of the ship's ungrounded networks, alarming on the first earth fault before a second one causes real trouble.

Normal lighting system

The everyday lighting installation throughout the ship, from engine room floodlights to cabin fittings, fed from the main electrical network.

Emergency lighting

Lighting on escape routes and at critical stations that switches automatically to the emergency power source, so a blackout never leaves the ship dark.

Searchlights & deck floodlights

The powerful lights for illuminating decks during night cargo work and searching the water surface.

Hazardous-area (Ex) lighting & equipment

Explosion-protected light fittings and electrical equipment certified for zones where flammable vapour may occur, built so they cannot become an ignition source.

Electrical cable distribution and cable-transit system

The cable runs themselves and the sealed transits where they pass through decks and bulkheads — the transits must block fire, smoke and water as effectively as the structure they penetrate.

Earthing, bonding and lightning-protection system

The network of connections that keeps all metal parts at the same electrical potential and gives lightning and static charge a safe path — vital where flammable cargoes are carried.

Waste-heat-recovery power-generation system

A plant that converts engine exhaust heat into electricity — via a steam or organic-fluid turbine — squeezing extra useful energy from fuel already burned.

Harmonic filtering and power-quality monitoring system

Filters and instruments that keep the electrical network clean when many power-electronic drives distort it, protecting sensitive equipment from harmonic pollution.

Fuel-cell power system

A power source that converts fuel to electricity electrochemically, without combustion — quiet, clean and increasingly trialled for auxiliary and harbour power.

Shore charging system for battery-electric ships

The high-power charging connection and controls with which a battery-electric ferry refills its batteries during short port calls, often automatically.
