Auxiliary boiler

A boiler producing steam for heating fuel, cargo and accommodation services when the main engine's waste heat is not enough — and on crude carriers, the large steam source for cargo pump turbines.

Exhaust gas economizer

A heat exchanger in the engine exhaust that makes steam from heat that would otherwise be thrown away up the funnel, so the boiler can often stay off at sea.

Thermal oil heater system

A heating plant that circulates hot oil instead of steam, reaching the high temperatures needed for cargoes like asphalt without high-pressure steam systems.

Steam & condensate system

The piping loop that distributes steam to consumers and returns the condensed water to the boiler feed system, including feed pumps, hotwell and dump condenser.

Central FW coolers

Large plate heat exchangers where the single seawater circuit cools a closed fresh-water loop; all machinery is then cooled by clean fresh water, so only these coolers suffer seawater corrosion.

SW cooling pumps & system

The pumps and sea chests that draw seawater into the ship and push it through the central coolers — the final heat sink for everything the machinery produces.

HT / LT FW cooling systems

Two fresh-water cooling loops: a high-temperature circuit for engine jackets and a low-temperature circuit for coolers and auxiliaries, with automatic valves holding each at its set temperature.

MGPS (sea chest anti-fouling)

An anti-fouling system, usually copper anodes or chlorine generation in the sea chests, that stops marine growth from colonising and blocking the cooling water intakes.

Main starting air compressors & receivers

Compressors and 30-bar air bottles that store the compressed air used to start the main and auxiliary diesels — large engines are started by air, not by electric motors.

Working & control air system (with dryer)

Lower-pressure compressed air for tools and, after drying and filtering, for pneumatic instruments and control valves that clean dry air keeps healthy.

Emergency air compressor

An independently powered small compressor that can refill a starting-air bottle from nothing, guaranteeing the ship can always start an engine even after total blackout.

Engine room ventilation fans

Large fans that push huge volumes of outside air through the engine room — the engines literally breathe this air, and the machinery's waste heat leaves with it.

Workshop machinery and welding-gas equipment

The engine-room workshop outfit — lathe, drills, grinders, welding sets and gas bottles — with which the crew repairs machinery at sea.
